May 2026 Deadlines: Reporting Your April Tip Income

Keeping track of tip income can feel like a chore, but staying ahead of IRS rules saves you from tax headaches down the road. If you work in the service industry, circle May 11 on your calendar.

The May 11 Deadline for Tipped Employees

Did you receive more than $20 in tips during April? If so, you need to report that total to your employer by May 11. You can use IRS Form 4070 or simply provide a signed written statement. Be sure to include your name, address, Social Security number, your employer's name, the period covered, and your total tips.

How Tip Withholding Works

Once you report your tips, your employer withholds FICA and income taxes from your regular paycheck. Sometimes, your hourly wages are not enough to cover those taxes. When that happens, the uncollected amount shows up in box 8 of your W-2, and you will need to pay it when you file your tax return.

Extensions and Relief

If a tax deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically moves to the next business day. Likewise, if you live in a declared disaster area, the IRS often provides extended relief to give you breathing room.
